Learning about cameras from the inside out!
The first HPS After School Photography Workshop is in the books! It was a busy class with 21 students spanning grades K-5. The goal was to learn about the basic elements of a camera. To do this we transformed the art room into a giant camera obscura and the then used every cardboard box and Pringles can from my home to build individual camera obscuras.
My favorite quote from a student when we were looking closely at the images projected though the classroom obscura was, “It’s upside down! Turn it around!” It was a perfect observation how light behaves when it passes through a tiny hole; the projected image is inverted because the reflected light bends or diffracts when it passes through the camera’s aperture. It works like this…

Next week we will study light, shadow and color; and create a still life ensemble.
